During normal venting, a sudden pressure drop occurs in the valve, causing very high air velocities in the supersonic range to create this loud bang. This is as loud as a jet taking off and quickly leads to irritated looks at the lake or scares animals.

You simply insert the deflator into the valve, press it down with the palm of your hand, and turn it briefly to the right. Then, the air escapes in a controlled manner and WITHOUT A BANG through many small openings.
